Description
Emil Julius Gumbel (1891–1966) was a mathematician and one of the fiercest critics of politically motivated justice in the Weimar Republic. In “Vier Jahre politischer Mord” (1922), he used statistical analysis to demonstrate the disparity in the prosecution of right-wing versus left-wing political violence. For this, he was vilified, lost his teaching license in 1932, and emigrated in 1933. At the same time, Gumbel pioneered work in extreme value theory; his major work, Statistics of Extremes, was published in 1958. An exhibition on the life and work of Emil Julius Gumbel will be on display in the foyer of the multi-purpose building on the Lahnberge campus from June to October 2027. Access is available during the building's opening hours.
